What is it?

The back basically means the spine. And all the muscles, ligaments and discs of course. The 24 vertebrae are protected by the skull on top. The bottom vertebra is on the sacrum. It is made of several vertebrae fused together. The sacrum is between the ilium bones to which it is connected through the sacroiliac joints.

When you see the spine, you can tell it’s made for movement. But it is not designed for a sustained rigid and upright stance. Nor is it suited to the turtle shape that goes with sitting at a desk. It needs constant variety. Turn, bend, stretch.

What matters now?

Almost everybody experiences back pain at some stage. Fortunately, 90% of the time it is entirely harmless.

Something that can move in so many different ways as the spine is susceptible to problems if the fine coordination isn’t right. That becomes a problem for the tormented back. The back goes into decline because we don’t use it the way we should. “Don’t curve your lower back when you bend over", “Don't twist too much, otherwise it will seize up again."

But a flexible back is less prone to injury. Flexibility comes from movement. You need to do those extreme movements and then they won’t hurt. If you spend less than a minute a day moving in every direction, you will avoid stiffness, injury and rigidity.
