Falls

Sudden falls are one of the biggest cost drivers for healthcare systems in Europe.

What is it?

Falls, i.e. an "unexpected event that causes a person to come to rest on the ground or at a lower level" (1), and their consequences, cost around CHF 1.4 billion a year. A lot of money that could be saved to a large extent with a few preventive measures.

What’s important at this stage?

The older, the fall. Age cannot be minimised here. This is because many age-related factors combine to increase the risk of falling: "The greatest risk factors include muscle weakness (with a 4.4-fold increase in the risk of falling) and gait and balance disorders (with a 3-fold increase in the risk of falling)." According to an international geriatric guideline (2).

On the one hand, external hazards must be reduced (wearing appropriate footwear, ensuring good lighting conditions, adapting walking and visual aids). Much more important, however, are so-called intrinsic factors that come from one's own body (3). Muscle strength and balance must be trained first and foremost. The bfu recommends 3 x 30 minutes per week. Medication and diet should be closely monitored. Dealing with dizziness and similar limitations must be practised.

Where does Sensopro come in?

When we hear "balance", we prick up our ears. Training on the tapes doesn't actually do anything else: the unstable surface throws you off balance. Just to force direct reactions from your body. Because stability is a reflex. And the better you train this reflex, the safer you will be in any everyday situation.
